Buckwheat, Amaranth and Black Rice

Often I get questions about gluten-free ingredients and foods. For the first time, I used buckwheat flour in the cocoa lentil bars (my last blog post). Therefore, I researched it, amaranth and black rice. In this post I want to share with you some quick facts about these three nutritious gluten-free ingredients. Buckwheat Contrary to popular belief, buckwheat is not a cereal grain, but is a fruit seed related to rhubarb and sorrel. It is gluten-free. Nutrition and Health Properties Buckwheat is a very good source of manganese, and a good source of magnesium, copper and dietary fibre. Magnesium contributes to the heart healthy benefits of buckwheat, since it is involved in relaxing blood vessels, improving blood flow and nutrient delivery, and lowering blood pressure. Buckwheat … Continue reading

All About Hemp

Often I receive new food, beverage and ingredient samples from suppliers to taste test or use in recipes. It is one of the interesting perks of being a Dietitian! Over the past six months, I’ve sampled avocado oils, ready to brew cocoa and hemp seeds, powder and flours. Hemp as a food is still a mystery to many, so I decided to create this Grow with Nutrition post All About Hemp. Let’s start by understanding the difference between marijuana and hemp. Both industrial hemp and marijuana have the same taxonomical classification of Cannabis sativa. However, hemp lacks much of the primary stimulating psychoactive ingredient in marijuana known as delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).  Hemp is bred to maximize the amount of fibre, seed and/or oil … Continue reading

Is the Pear the New Apple for me this Fall?

Apples are my go-to fruit this time of year. I’m always snacking on them and adding them to recipes. However this year, I’m shaking things up a bit with pears. Pears are one of the most common fruit as there are over 5,000 types world-wide. China is the largest producer of pears, followed by the United States, Italy, Argentina, and Spain. In Canada, common varieties that are enjoyed include Bartlett pears, Bosc pears, Flemish Beauty pears, Anjou pears, Giffard pears, and Clapp’s Favourite pear.  We grow them mostly in southwestern Ontario, Nova Scotia, and along the coast of British Columbia. However, southern New Brunswick, southwestern Alberta, and the south coast of Newfoundland are areas where pears are grown too. … Continue reading

Diggin’ Figs for Health

I love the smoky, earthy, coffee flavours in figs. As a teenager, I packed Fig Newtons® in my lunch religiously every school day but rarely ate fresh figs due to the lack of availability. Today in Canada, both fresh and dried figs are an everyday fruit. Did you know, the fig is the most talked about fruit in the Bible and figs were mentioned in a Babylonian hymnbook about 2000 B.C.? And the fig tree is the symbol of abundance, fertility, and sweetness.   More Fun Fig Facts Figs made their first commercial product appearance in the 1892 (A century before I was packing them in my lunch…) with the introduction of Fig Newtons® Cookies. The fibre in figs is … Continue reading

Blueberries – stay true blue

If you have heard my presentation about Superfoods for Health, you will recall that I love blueberries for many reasons. Nutrition aside, I’m intrigued with the small but mighty berries that are one of a few natural blue foods grown in the world. With the games in London over the next week, doesn’t this Union Jack Cake look delicious and fun to have at your Olympic theme party over the long weekend. The recipe can be found at STYLENEST.  Just remember to exercise (like an Olympian, if you have the fever) to balance out this delicious indulgent. As a dietitian, I'm asked the question “go big or go wild?” Hmmm, well, when it comes to blueberries, I eat a variety of fresh and … Continue reading
