Food and Fitness Tips for Busy Entrepreneurs

As a dietitian and a business owner of a growing venture, I never experience the same schedule twice. With that in mind, I know firsthand it can be challenging to stay on track with a healthy lifestyle – particularly when I’m travelling. People are searching for ways to help them live a better, healthier and happier life. It’s not a secret that diet, fitness, and sleep are leading factors in my healthy lifestyle equation.

When you practice healthy eating, have a fitness strategy and get restful sleep daily it prepares you to deal with the stress life throws at you. Let’s explore my top food and fitness tips for busy entrepreneurs to stay on track with your healthy lifestyle.

Food

At the Hotel

For business travel, when I’m at a hotel for more than two nights I want an in-room fridge or mini kitchen so I’m not relying on restaurant food portion sizes. I recommend checking out local grocery stores that specialize in premade healthy options. Last year while attending Experimental Biology in San Diego, after checking into my hotel, my first stop was at Jimbo’s Natural Food Grocer to stock up on delish quinoa salad, Greek yogurt, sunflower seeds, almonds and fresh fruit.

On the Road

As a traveling foodie and entrepreneur I love teaching clients, friends and family how to prepare for all day travel, so you’re not reliant on high calorie, high sodium fast food options. The night before the road trip, line up all your favourites including fruits, veggies, sandwiches, nuts and seeds. Purchase sealable containers, ice packs and coolers to transport your favourite foods on the road trip. Then make sure you have a healthy well balanced breakfast including high quality protein before you hit the road.

Fitness

At the Hotel

Take advantage of the hotel’s fitness rooms, running clinics and other in-room exercise programs. If I’m travelling only for one night and can’t fit in my running shoes into my small suitcase, I will ask for a yoga mat to be delivered (a service from Hyatt), then in the morning before my busy day I will complete a yoga or pilates routine. If it is a longer stay, then I pack my running shoes, jump rope and fitness clothes. Skipping for just 10 minutes can burn well over 135 calories in just 10 minutes. Plus you will tighten and sculpt your shoulders, chest, arms, and legs. You can purchase a jump rope for under $10 at any sports store.

On the Road

Take a 10 minute break from driving, put on your running shoes and walk – fast! Ten minutes of walking three times a day can lower blood pressure and boost both your mind and body. All you need is a good pair of walking or running shoes in the car. Then it’s as simple as setting a schedule, pulling off the road to a park or area with sidewalks and walking.
