Since the 1980s, Canadians (government, industry, educators, health professionals and consumers) have been talking about health promotion. Now, it is 2011 and we are experiencing an obesity epidemic and an increase in other lifestyle related diseases such as type 2 diabetes not only in the adult population but in the child population. What happened? The cause is multi-factorial, but basically we are eating too much and not exercising enough. The fast food industry has exploded, portion sizes of restaurant and convenience foods have increased over the past three decades and the reliance from the average consumer on these foods has outweighed home cooked meals and snacks.
