Trick or Treating. Some helpful, healthy tips!

Halloween is a great time for kids. They have lots of fun with costume parties and with trick-or-treating. The concern for parents is deciding what to do with those big trick-or-treat bags full of candy and sweet treats. With the current stats in Canada and the US, many kids are overweight and loading up on all that sugar and fat in a short period of time is not a great idea. Pumpkin: The Nutrition Facts and Adding it to your Menu

Well the first question…Is the pumpkin a fruit or vegetable? Technically it comes from the squash family (which are actually fruits). Either way, the pumpkin and its seeds are nutritional powerhouses. The inside of the pumpkin is very versatile and can be used for many foods such as pie, soup, bread, in a casserole or as a side. Pumpkin Pumpkin is high in fibre, vitamin A and carotenoids (examples include beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein) which gives it the deep orange colour. Foods rich in carotenoids have been linked to a number of health promoting and disease-fighting activities. Workplace wellness programs include one or more common components such as a health risk assessment, healthy eating, physical activity, smoking cessation, and stress management. Happy Thanksgiving and Enjoy Healthy Eating

I’m looking forward to a terrific weekend of rest and relaxation, visiting with friends and family and enjoying great food. For some people, Thanksgiving eating means abandoning sensible everyday choices while overeating. You can have the delicious tastes of the fall season by going for quality and not the quantity of food. Does it make sense to get your money’s worth at the family dinner? Many people overeat not being mindful of what they are eating and when they are full.
